Sunday Stories:

Scion Reveals iQ Concept at the 2009 New York International Auto Show

Scion’s iQ concept is the intelligent answer to this need for highly emotional and efficient urban transportation. The convenience of having work, entertainment and culture nearby for young city-dwellers is a significant draw to urban centers. The vehicle must be able to navigate narrow, congested streets, park in tight places, have impressive fuel economys, and have compelling design and function.

“Scion’s iQ concept turns traditional auto design upside down,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. “Traditionally small vehicles have been thought of as being basic. The iQ concept is just the opposite with its innovative features and iconic urban design, and we believe it fits in well within the Scion brand. Our young, trendsetting buyers are creative and innovative forward thinkers, and we think they will appreciate what iQ has to offer.”

The production iQ is currently sold in Japan and Europe. Five Axis of Huntington Beach, Calif. took the iQ to the next level with aggressive exterior and interior modifications that show the vehicle’s potential for personalization.

With its 78.7-inch wheelbase, the three-door hatchback can deftly maneuver through city traffic. At the same time, its overall length of 126.9-inches, overall width of 71.4-inches, and short front and rear overhangs allow the iQ to fit in virtually any city parking space. The front-mounted differential and repositioned steering rack decrease front end length. In addition, the iQ is equipped with a flat gas tank housed beneath the floor that reduces rear overhang.

Pushing the wheels of the small, bold concept towards the four corners of the body gives the iQ a confident stance. The custom 18-inch wheels with a nickel finish and wide tires fill the wheel well, adding to its surefootedness. The iQ’s custom front air dam, aero headlamps and high-intensity LED driving lamps signal urban road readiness.

“We believe the Scion iQ micro-subcompact concept is the future of transportation,” said Hollis. “If it should join our future line-up, I think it could reach iconic status like our xB. Its styling will attract attention and if it’s a Scion, you know it’ll be easy to personalize.”

The iQ’s profile is defined by a strong and high beltline. Smooth lines glide from the large, dark finish headlamps, up the A-pillar, across the roof and wrap around the rear emphasizing the concept’s geometric beauty. Side mirrors with integrated turn signals accent the clean design.

The rear emphasizes the vehicle’s modern style. Trapezoidal lines run toward the wheels, from the hatch to the thick rear diffuser, creating a substantial presence. A center-mounted trapezoid exhaust adds to the vehicle’s distinctiveness, while large, matte-finished rear taillights help keep the vehicle visible.

The iQ’s interior fuses function, style and entertainment. Attention to detail and modern accents can be seen in the illuminated door handle; the swiveling spotlight that hovers over the dash; an illuminated iQ logo on the passenger-side dash and nickel and raw aluminum toned interior panels. Iridescent green and gray honeycomb upholstery covering the door panels and seating areas, combined with the custom exterior paint, provides a balance of freshness and sophistication. Black matte scuba-like polyurethane covers the seat bolsters and is also used on the headliner with a bright green topstitch for a contemporary finish.

The iQ features a 10-inch panel LCD screen on top of the center cluster that serves as the main entertainment console and navigation system interface. With the push of a button, the touch-screen articulates to reveal the entertainment hub. The touch screen can also play movies while the vehicle is parked. When not in use, the screen lays flat on the dash with a translucent cover that emits a colorful display of light patterns to make the interior even more unique.

A few quick strokes to the black panel below the entertainment hub, or steering wheel controls, command the audio system to shuffle through a music library. The center cluster also features three control knobs for dual front heating and air conditioning settings. The driver and front passenger each have a knob that displays their desired temperature and controls their temperature and fan settings. The center knob dictates zone control for both occupants.

The instrument panel has a speedometer, warning lamps, and a multi-information display. The multi-information display allows the driver to toggle through the odometer, average speed, temperature and eco lamp. The eco lamp illuminates during efficient driving to help the driver achieve maximum fuel economy.

Comfortable front passenger legroom was achieved with a newly-engineered, compact air conditioning unit located behind the center of the front console. The iQ employs a glove bag, with the same textured, honeycomb fabric as the front and rear seats, that can be easily snapped on and off for storage or additional legroom.

Rear seating can accommodate one adult behind the front passenger and a child, small package, or pet behind the driver. Extra slim front seat backs provide rear passengers with legroom. The rear seats are 50/50 and fold flat for increased utility. In addition, the rear seat cushion lifts up to reveal a small flat storage space that can be used for pocket-sized portable music players, small books, digital cameras, or slim laptops.

The iQ does not skimp on safety and is equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC); an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD); Brake Assist (BA); and nine SRS airbags, which includes the world's first rear window curtain airbag. Other airbags include driver and front passenger front airbags; driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags; side curtain airbags; a driver knee airbag; and a front passenger seat cushion airbag.

Sunday Stories: Toyota HC-CV

Toyota HC-CV : Toyota HC-CV (Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle

Hybrid vehicles are Toyota’s playground and today they proved this again with a nice concept based on the Carmy Hybrid, the HC-CV or Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle, straight from Australia.

The HC-CV is mainly a modded Camry with a pretty sport kit including a new front bumper, side skirts, and futuristic wheels… And you know what? We damn like it! If only the HC-CV could be sold as it is it would spice things up a little in the dull hybrid world.

Toyota Australia has celebrated winning the right to manufacture a hybrid car in Australia by producing a stylish concept car.

Developed locally by Toyota Style Australia, the HC-CV (Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle) had its world premiere ahead of the 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show.

The unveiling of the concept car marks the start of a 12-month countdown to the launch of Australia's first locally produced hybrid car, based on the best-selling Camry sedan.

Toyota Australia president and chief executive officer Max Yasuda said the concept car was the most important vehicle on the company's motor show stand.

"The startling paintwork, dramatic lines and sporty appearance of this concept car convey the excitement and passion in our company to produce Australia's first hybrid car," Mr Yasuda said.

"The hybrid Camry - which will share some key design features with the HC-CV - will play a key role in bringing the future to the Australian automotive manufacturing sector.

"It is a future that uses less fuel while delivering better performance."

The hybrid Camry uses a four-cylinder petrol engine linked to a powerful electric motor.

It produces more power than a conventional petrol-engine vehicle while delivering better fuel economy.

Mr Yasuda said many industry commentators were urging carmakers to produce more fuel-efficient cars.

"Toyota is already the only local manufacturer producing a four-cylinder car in this country. We have been building Camry in this country - in Melbourne - for nearly 22 years.

"It's been Australia's best-selling medium car for 15 years - and it's our leading automotive export.

"Toyota also produces the most fuel-efficient Australian-made large six-cylinder sedan, the Aurion, in Melbourne.

"Our locally manufactured hybrid Camry will be launched early next year."

Contemporary hybrid design

Toyota Style Australia corporate manager Paul Beranger said Toyota has evolved the styling of its hybrid vehicles since the late 1990s.

"HC-CV is our expression of the contemporary hybrid sedan," he said.

The front of the car is characterised by expressive, sharp lines and taught surfaces. It echoes the latest Toyota Hybrid styling cues, with vertical fog lamps, larger lower opening and a streamlined upper grille.

"The crisp corners indicate aerodynamic efficiency, while the overall styling feel is efficient, yet dynamic," Mr Beranger said.

"The lower grille texture is a random pattern, inspired by forms found in nature, moving away from traditional constructed patterns," he said.

The "aero" theme continues along the side skirts, which flow into the rear diffuser, giving a sporty, yet lightweight and functional appearance. The rear spoiler enhances the visual appeal.

The headlights are symbolic of Toyota's hybrid image with a blue hue. They fuse technical elements with natural forms. Some lenses have a waterfall impression, while others are functional, lightweight and technical in appearance. The rear LED lamps, also with a blue hue, provide an unmistakable hybrid look.

Toyota logos on the car are also highlighted by a translucent blue hue. The satin chrome front grille, mirrors and rear boot-lid garnish add to the clean, crisp image.

The wheels are a combination of shear, overlayed surfaces and graphics.

The body colour is unique - a satin white pearl with subtle blue highlights to provide a serene, calm feeling. The paint allows intricate detailing and features to show through.

The interior uses contrasting coloured trim. Highlights of metallic blue have been applied asymmetrically to the seats in a wave-like graphic reminiscent of the Hybrid Synergy Drive logo.

The seat embossing echoes the exterior grille mesh with a tree bark-like pattern. White stitching adds a subtle, yet premium touch. Satin chrome accents tie in with the exterior and add to the tranquil environment.

Sunday Stories: Truck Or Die!

Truck Or Die! Toyota’s Vision of the SEMA 2008

Earlier today we talked about Honda and their SEMA 2008 show car selection. Now let’s see Toyota’s vision, and yes we have trucks, trucks, and more trucks... Oh wait there's a Yaris Too!

We admit that, except the Five Axis Design Yaris Club and the Tundra Ducati Transporter, we aren't overwhelmed by Toyota’s vision. From our European perspective we're not accustomed to seeing a truck as an everyday commuter.

Tunder Ducati Transport
The Ducati Desmosedici RR is the only street legal MotoGP bike ever produced. The ultimate track day bike requires the ultimate transport; that’s where Toyota comes in with the 2009 Tundra Ducati Desmosedici transporter.

The Tundra/Ducati Transporter is built on a Tundra CrewMax, which has been modified to accept a 6.5-inch bed. The transporter is tied thematically to the bike, incorporating Ducati Corse style along with high tech materials and execution to create synergies for two companies obsessed with quality and performance. Additional features include major bed innovations such as flip up bedsides, a motorized loading ramp by Rampage, integrated tool and spares storage, and popup solar panels for accessory power.
Performance is enhanced through the full catalog of TRD Performance parts such as supercharger, exhaust, intake, suspension and brakes.

The interior treatment by Fast Ed’s Interiors combines high tech style with Italian flair.

Five Axis Design Yaris Club
The Yaris Club project pays tribute to Toyota’s racing heritage harkening back to the late ‘60s when Toyota challenged for the Group 7 category of Can-Am racing with the Toyota 7.

The Yaris Club is a stripped-down, no-nonsense car with no extras – only what is needed to perform. The roof has been removed and the windshield lowered.

With the interior removed, a tonneau was fabricated, turning the Yaris into a single seater with a fairing that doubles as a driver headrest.

A supercharger, exhaust headers and a free-flowing exhaust were added for performance to back up the good looks. The suspension was lowered by two inches with front and rear coil-over shocks and larger brakes added.

The Yaris Club was developed by Five Axis in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Sunday Stories: iQ100G : Toyota to Launch Ultra-compact 'iQ' in Japan Permalink Toyota to Launch Ultra-compact 'iQ' in Japan

Toyota to Launch Ultra-compact 'iQ' in Japan

Hey Folks! We're just back from Tokyo's Makuhari Messe where we were invited to a showcase of the new iQ from Toyota. It's was an awesome American style show with at least 30 cars exhibited!

Here's some nice pictures of the iQ which will be available on November 20th.

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today it will begin sales of its new "micro-premium" car, the "iQ*1", in Japan starting on November 20.

The iQ combines outstanding performance and superior quality in an ultra-compact form that dispels conventional notions about small cars.

A newly designed platform enables an ultra-efficient package that seats four in a vehicle 2,985mm long by 1,680mm wide by 1,500mm high. The iQ's unique styling creates a sense of sophistication and presence that belies the car's size.

A 1.0-liter engine delivers outstanding cruising and environmental performance, offers fuel efficiency at the highest levels for its displacement, and also meets the new 2015 Japanese fuel efficiency standards under the recently introduced JC08 test cycle. The iQ is highly responsive at low and medium speeds, provides stable cruising performance at high speeds, and has a minimum turning radius of 3.9 meters—one of the shortest in the industry. In addition, a S-VSC (Steering-assisted Vehicle Stability Control) system and a total of nine airbags, including the world's first*2 SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) rear window curtain shield airbag, are standard on all models to provide outstanding safety performance.

The iQ is also planned to go on sale in Europe in early 2009.

Vehicle Outline

Cutting-edge design

* The iQ embodies the Toyota vehicle design philosophy of "Vibrant Clarity" by fusing conflicting elements to create something that is "small yet spacious".
* Mathematical models based on conch shells and water ripples were used to create interior and exterior lines, surfaces and designs reflecting the beauty of nature.
* The wheel arches, emphasized by the placement of the 15-inch wheels as close to the four corners of the vehicle as possible, and the robust front view all integrate with the flowing body lines to convey stability and dynamism.
* "Aero-corners" designed into the front and rear bumpers emphasize the strength of the wheel arches and provide outstanding aerodynamic performance.
* The world's first* high and low beam integrated projector headlights and LED rear combination taillights are testament to the iQ's cutting-edge status.
* Door mirrors with highly visible built-in turning signals come standard.
* Nine body colors, including the new Jade Green Metallic, are available.
* The center cluster and door trim, the design of which was influenced by the motion of a manta ray, help create a refined interior space.
* The angular instrument panel combines with the flowing curves of the center cluster to create a space that feels both technologically advanced and natural.
* The seats, steering wheel, and gear shift knob feature real leather for a high-quality feel (in the 100G "Leather Package").
* The steering wheel, instead of being fully circular, has a flat bottom section to facilitate comfortable operation and ease of ingress and egress.
* Available steering-wheel-mounted audio system controls enhance operability.
* The angle-adjustable white, round LED map light provides broad light.
* The temperature, mode, and airflow of the automatic air conditioning are adjustable through a single dial.

* As of September 2008, according to research by TMC

Six methods used to achieve ultra-efficient package

* Inverting the differential gear and putting its output axle in front made it possible to position the wheels forward of the engine, resulting in a reduced front overhang.
* Optimal component placement—moving the differential gear forward (see above) and positioning the steering gearbox higher—allowed for a compact engine compartment.
* A flat fuel tank located below the floor reduced rear overhang.
* The driver and front passenger seatbacks were made thinner, while still providing seat grip and comfort, to create greater legroom in the back.
* A much smaller air conditioning module is housed in the center of the instrument panel thereby increasing passenger legroom.
* Repositioning the air conditioner allowed for an asymmetrical dashboard that gives the front passenger seat a greater sliding range, allowing for comfortable use of the rear.

By use of the above, an ultra-efficient package has been created that seats four—three adults and one child. Further, ample space for a large suitcase can be created by use of the 50/50-split rear seats. Also, storage space created under the rear seats further enhances convenience.

Outstanding environmental performance

* The 1.0-liter engine boasts fuel efficiency of 23.0km/l in the 10-15 Japanese test cycle of the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), and 21.0km/l in the JC08 test cycle. The iQ meets the new 2015 Japanese fuel efficiency standards*. (CO2 emissions are 101g/km in the older 10-15 cycle and 111g/km in the JC08 test cycle.)
* The vehicle also achieves 75% lower emissions than the 2005 standards under the MLIT's Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles.
* An Eco Driving Indicator that lights up to signify fuel-efficient vehicle operation and a new "eco-drive zone" display showing throttle use aim to raise driver awareness toward environmentally friendly driving.
* A switch-engaged Eco Mode improves fuel efficiency by more optimally aligning driving force with accelerator operation and by putting the air conditioner into a low energy consumption mode.
* TMC employed the Eco-Vehicle Assessment System (Eco-VAS)—its original comprehensive environmental impact assessment system. Efforts included setting environmental targets at the start of vehicle development to achieve balanced reduction in areas of environmental impact and carrying out a life cycle assessment for reducing overall CO2 and atmospheric contaminants throughout the vehicle's lifecycle, from production and use to disposal.
* A review of the materials, processing methods and adhesives usually used for interior parts resulted in a reduction in the amount of volatile organic compounds used, thereby also reducing the unpleasant odors normally emitted from such compounds, thus achieving the Japanese automobile industry's voluntary goals.

* Specified by the Japanese Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy

Driving performance characterizes both agility and stability

* A newly developed electric-power steering system and suspension provide crisp response at low and medium speeds and stable driving performance at high speeds.
* Power steering delivers both responsiveness and smoothness of operation for outstanding handling and driving pleasure.
* The suspension system features MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam system in the rear for a level of cruising stability and comfort uncommon with such a short wheelbase.
* The combination of a 1.0-liter 1KR-FE engine with Super CVT-i delivers superior cruising and environmental performance.
* A new intake system layout created to fit the compact engine compartment provides ample torque at low and medium speeds as well as outstanding acceleration performance during stop-and-go city driving.
* Super CVT-i uses a wide gear-ratio range and a lock-up torque converter that works even at low speeds, and achieves both excellent driving performance and fuel efficiency by working effectively with the engine.
* Electronically controlled, liquid-filled engine mounts that delicately reduce engine vibration and a windshield featuring sound-absorbing glass contribute to a highly tranquil cabin.

High safety performance

* A total of nine airbags come standard, including the world's first SRS rear window curtain shield airbag, which deploys from the roof lining above the rear window to protect rear passengers' heads in the event of a rear-end collision.
* The S-VSC system, which also comes standard, optimally balances driving power, steering and braking, aiming to maintain driving stability regardless of road conditions.
* Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) construction has been further developed to create an advanced collision-safety body structure. The iQ was subjected to omni-directional, vehicle-to-vehicle collision tests with a heavier vehicle and the results met the stringent GOA standards for superior collision safety performance.
* The structure of the body reduces the likelihood of pedestrian head injuries.
* Newly developed seats with integrated headrests—designed in line with the Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) concept—are standard for the front seats. In a rear-end collision, the entire seatback, including the headrest, absorbs the force to alleviate impact on the neck and reduce whiplash injuries.

Sunday Stories: Toyota Aygo Crazy Concept

Toyota Aygo Crazy Concept

The Aygo is Toyota's european mini-car, the kind that is made to take you from "downtown point A to downtown point B" and not necesseraly quickly...now... have you ever wondered what if Toyota was to go *crazy* with the Aygo? To be honest I didn't either but they did ! And turned the quiet city car into an adrenaline machine offering 200hp, rear wheel drive and 0 to 100 in just 5.75 seconds !
Reminds me the Ultimate Nissan Micra R from the UK!

All the details from the official "P.R" here for you, the car will be displayed at the London Motor Show.

Aygo Crazy is the perfect antidote to all those wild concept cars that look great on the show stand but never turn a wheel. It is a unique machine that has been developed from the start to deliver no-holds-barred maximum driving pleasure, an unforgettable, fun experience.

Making its public debut at the British International Motor Show in London, Aygo Crazy is a one-off model, a “shopping supercar” that takes Aygo’s essential qualities to the limit. Owing more to the spirit of Group B rallying rather than D1 drifting, this is a car that is all about the joy of driving: with no electronic handling aids, no power steering and no ABS, it is like a kart with doors and a roof.

Recognisably an Aygo, it clearly packs more muscle with its custom-made body, 17-inch alloys and beefy Goodyear 225/45 rubber. There is even a direct link to Toyota’s sporting heritage as Aygo Crazy’s carbon fibre rear wing is a part taken directly from the 200mph race cars in the American Champ Car series.

Aygo Crazy is fettled with the Toyota 1.8 VVT-i unit that powered the final generation Celica and MR2 Roadster, rear-mounted and driving the rear wheels through the Roadster’s five-speed manual gearbox. The addition of a Toyota Motorsport turbo conversion kit boosts power output to 200DIN hp and torque to 240Nm.

Compare the performance to the 68 DIN bhp and 93Nm mustered by the standard road-going Aygo and you gain some idea of just what a different kind of machine this is.

To cope with the greater engine performance, a bespoke cooling system has been designed, with a huge, front-mounted aluminium radiator – ideal for those endless, tyre smoking, crowd pleasing donuts.

Weighing in at just 1,050kg, Aygo Crazy is capable of 127mph (est), but speed is not its defining quality: this is a machine that exists to be responsive and alive to the driver’s commands, to put smiles on the faces of those inside and outside the car.

The suspension is from the MR2 Roadster, with MacPherson struts front and rear. Adjustable Tein dampers sharpen dynamic performance and the front and rear track are one inch wider than on a standard Aygo.

The cabin, finished by specialist coachtrimmers O’Rourke, features purpose-built sports seats with four-point safety harnesses and a full roll cage.

With its bold Aygo Crazy decals and T2 4YGO (turbocharged, two-seat Aygo) number plate, Aygo Crazy will be hitting the show circuit – and the open road – this summer, proving that while this Aygo may be crazy, it’s a memorable madness.

* A one-off concept designed for pure driving fun
* Built to be driven, not just for show
* Rear-mounted engine generates 200 DIN hp and 240Nm of torque
* Hand-crafted bodywork and 17-inch alloy wheels
* World debut at next month’s British International Motor Show
